Symphony offering Beethoven to Beatles

For his second full year with the Columbus Symphony, Music Director Jean-Marie Zeitouni has built a Masterworks series in which many programs focus on composer pairings — Tchaikovsky and Schubert, for example, on Oct. 12-13; and Rachmaninoff and Sibelius on Nov. 2-3.
Also among the 2012-13 season highlights will be Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, featuring dancers from BalletMet Columbus.
“Instead of the orchestra accompanying the ballet from the pit,” Zeitouni said, “the audience gets to see the dialogue of the orchestra performing with the ballet onstage.”
For the second year, the orchestra will perform Masterworks concerts in both the Ohio and Southern theaters. This season was the first to split the classical concerts between the two venues.
“The orchestra loves performing in the Southern Theatre,” Zeitouni said. “Because of the great acoustics, they can really hear themselves — which allows them to better explore the subtleties of the music.”
The orchestra will again perform 12 Masterworks programs and six pops concerts in addition to the season opener, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, on Oct. 5.
Other highlights of the season: a “Baroque Festival,” with Monica Huggett conducting and performing on violin; a choral world premiere by composer Stephen Paulus in honor of the 30th anniversary of Ronald Jenkins as director of the Columbus Symphony Chorus; and pops concerts featuring the Fab Four Beatles re-enactment group and Cirque de la Symphonie.
A variety of subscription packages and prices will be available. Subscriptions will go on sale on March 26. Single tickets will go on sale on Aug. 15.
