Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife expects to have the biggest Beatles’ museum in the world

JPGR Trade Mark Beatles Museum

Nicolás Lemus, writer and publisher of the book “Los Beatles en Tenerife” has promoted a private initiative to host a permanent exhibition of the famous British band formed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife.
Mr. Lemus leads a group of entrepreneurs that are trying to gain official support to get under way a project that would place Tenerife in the map of the Beatles’ fans creating a permanent exhibition similar to Graceland (Elvis Presley) or Neverland (Michael Jackson).
A Spanish collector owner of more than seven thousand Beatles’ collectibles is the key part of this project developed by Nicolás Lemus. He has mentioned that there is a chance to set up the museum in the Taoro Hotel as well. “This project is a big dream for us and we have been working on it for some time, but there is nothing sure for the moment. First, we have to travel to Madrid to see the Beatles’ collection and after that we have to discuss our idea with the authorities of the city”, said the author.
The book by Nicolás Lemus published in June 2010 tells the journey of Paul McCartney, George Harrison y Ringo Starr to the north of the island. “We published 500 copies that were sold out in less than three months”, said Lemus. In September, he launched a revised second edition of 750 copies. “In the first edition it is mentioned that Paul McCarney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr travelled to Tenerife together with their friend Astrid Kirchherr, but the truth is that she was in the island when they arrived”, said Lemus.
The interest of Beatles’ fans in the book called the attention of the writer. Many fans got in contact with him to know more about the travel of the artists to the island after recording their first album “Please Please Me”. “After they finished the album in February 1963, John Lennon travelled to Torremolinos with Brian Epstein, but Paul insisted on travelling to Tenerife with the other members of the band”, said the writer.
Nicolás Lemus started the research for the book in 1995 when he discovered that part of the famous band had stayed in a cottage property of the Voormaan family located in the coastal town called La Montañesa from April 28th to May 9th 1963. Paul insisted on visiting Tenerife and convinced his partners to go with him. During their stay in the island, Paul suffered an accident when he was swimming in the sea near Martíanez. The sea current dragged him and he barely reached the beach after a great effort. He was about to die that day. On the other hand, George Harrison got sunstroke and had fever for a couple of days.
The Beatles stayed the major part of their vacations in the cottage located in the seaside resort called Lido San Telmo. However, they took a trip to Las Cañadas, visited the view point at Izaña, and participated in a bullfight in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. On the other hand, Harrison who was a motor race enthusiast borrowed an Austin Healy Spritey (GC 14112) property of Klaus Voormann, to go for a drive along the La Orotava valley. The Beatles where barely known in Tenerife in the 60s. Lemus commented that “Paul McCartney was upset because nobody knew them here, and they didn’t obtain a permission to give a concert in Tenerife”.
The writer started working on this book in 2001 and he has said that the most difficult part of the project was to obtain images of the Beatles. “The only available pictures of the Beatles were taken at the solarium of the Lido San Telmo swimming pools. I have been looking for more pictures, but it was impossible”, said the author. Lemus added that he tried to get in contact with Paul McCartney, the widow of Harrison and Ringo Starr. “I wanted to talk with them about the journey, but they didn’t answer me.
The experiences recounted in the 157 pages book “Los Beatles en Tenerife” called the attention of the fans of this legendary band including the owner of the biggest Beatles’ collection in the world. Now it depends on the collector to borrow his collection and on the authorities to sponsor the project for Puerto de la Cruz to have the biggest Beatles’ museum in the world.
