1968 was a momentous year for Elvis Presley. It was the year of his comeback TV special, it marked the release of Elvis's Golden Records Vol 4, a hugely successful album, and what's more his only child Lisa - Marie was born.
The photos of him holding her show the delight he must have been feeling, his eyes shining and that slightly crooked smile of his fixed firmly on his face. For years Lisa - Marie shunned publicity, not talking about her world famous father. When asked if she would be following in his footsteps the answer was a resounding no. All that changed in 2003 when at last she released her debut album, "To Whom It May Concern".
The critics weren't that kind to her, but the record buying public were. The album reached #5 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
These days Lisa - Marie, as well as making music, is actively involved with dozens of charitable events and is the head of "The Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation", helping homeless families, offering a year's free rent on properties to allow them to get on their feet, and is also working within the" Literacy Education and Ability Programme" (LEAP) that she set up with Isaac Hayes in the mid 80's.
The announcement that she is due to star at the mecca of country music "The Grand Old Opry", shows that now she is a star in her own right. Finally the mantle of "The Princess Of Rock And Roll" now sits rightly on her shoulders.
I hope you can join me, Ivor Cole, and Vicki Kerrigan this afternoon after 5pm to listen to the Presley made music and talk more about their family ties.
