Due out sometime in 2013, the documentary ‘Good Ol’ Freda’ is the untold story of Freda Kelly, The Beatles‘ trusted secretary and longtime friend. Kelly, who got to know the Beatles in 1961 when they first arrived onto the Cavern scene in Liverpool, England, was one of the band’s earliest fans and in turn, greatly rewarded for it.
Kelly became friends with the Fab Four prior to their future manager Brian Epstein getting involved. A year later, when Epstein did sign on as their official representative, Kelly was offered a job as secretary and she carried that title throughout the entire Beatles’ ride. ‘Good Ol’ Freda’ intends to tell her story and is the first Beatles documentary of its kind.
The title comes from the famous line that the Beatles shout out on their 1963 Christmas record. It referenced Kelly’s job of running The Official Beatles Fan Club, which under her management grew from a 100 people to more than 70,000 members worldwide.
As if this story of super-fan-turns-secretary isn’t dreamy enough, it gets better. The filmmakers turned to fans of the Beatles to help them produce Kelly’s film. Using Kickstarter (a sponsor-funded platform for creative projects), the filmmakers set a goal of raising $50,000 dollars to fund Kelly’s story.
Beatles fans then had the opportunity to donate money towards the project and, depending on the size of donation, earn themselves copies of the DVD when completed, signed pictures from Kelly’s personal collection and / or even the chance to earn a credit on the film itself. In short, by donating to the project, Beatles fans had a chance to become part of Beatles history.
On Nov. 11 the film’s mission surpassed its funding goal, reaching $58,000. Thanks to Beatles fans everywhere, ‘Good Ol’ Freda’ will be released in 2013.
