These amazing pictures – never seen before – were taken in 1966 as Lennon took a break from The Beatles for an acting role in the film comedy How I Won The War.
In the movie – set in North Africa but filmed in Spain – he played Private Gripweed, alongside Michael Crawford who later starred in Some Mothers Do ’Ave ’Em.
Director Richard Lester gave Lennon, 26, the part after he had worked with the Beatles on movies A Hard Day’s Night and Help!
Unfortunately the film failed to bowl over critics.
